Gentle Dental Care for Kids
At Dubbo Dental, our therapists care for children and adolescents in a setting that’s calm and supportive. Our team understands that every child’s oral health needs are different, and we tailor each appointment to suit their stage of development. We offer preventative care such as cleans, fissure seals and fluoride treatments, alongside monitoring of tooth eruption, jaw growth and early signs of orthodontic concern. When restorative work is needed, such as fillings or baby tooth extractions, we take a gentle and measured approach, ensuring children are involved and informed in a way that makes sense to them.
We aim to help children build familiarity with dental care and develop good habits from an early age. Our team works closely with families to provide guidance around brushing, diet and oral development milestones. For children with additional needs or dental anxiety, we offer flexible options and take extra time to ensure the experience is as smooth and reassuring as possible. Everything we do is centred on helping young patients feel safe, respected and comfortable during their care.

Your Child’s Dental Visit
A child’s first few visits to the dentist are often about building trust and routine. We begin with a gentle check-up to look at how the teeth and jaws are developing and assess the condition of the gums and soft tissues. Depending on the child’s age and comfort level, we may also clean the teeth, apply fluoride, or place fissure sealants on the molars to help prevent decay. We explain each step in a way that’s simple and reassuring, so children understand what’s happening and can feel in control of the experience.
As children grow, their dental visits may include X-rays, bite assessments and discussions about oral habits like thumb-sucking or grinding. We monitor for early signs of crowding, misalignment or other concerns that may require referral or intervention later. For children with more complex needs, including anxiety or sensory sensitivities, we adjust our pace and communication accordingly. Every appointment is designed to support both the child and their parent or carer with information that’s useful and clear.

When should a child first see a dentist?
Most dental professionals recommend that children have their first dental visit by the time their first tooth erupts or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Early visits help the child become familiar with the dental environment and allow the dentist to check that development is on track. These appointments are usually brief and focused on prevention, not treatment. Parents can also ask questions about brushing, feeding and teething.
How do dentists manage children who are anxious or nervous?
Dentists are trained to adapt their approach based on a child’s age, temperament and comfort level. Techniques such as ‘tell-show-do’, distraction and positive reinforcement are commonly used to reduce anxiety. The environment is often kept quiet and predictable, and children are never rushed through care. In some cases, appointments may be shortened or spaced out to build confidence gradually.
Are baby teeth really that important if they fall out anyway?
Yes — baby teeth play a vital role in a child’s oral and overall development. They help with eating, speaking and guiding the proper alignment of adult teeth as they come through. Decay or premature loss of baby teeth can lead to issues such as crowding, speech delays or infection. Maintaining baby teeth through regular care and treatment when needed helps avoid more complex problems later. A dentist will advise on the best way to care for baby teeth at each stage.
